Behind the Scenes: Albert Frost Shoot

It is impossible to love the music of Albert Frost alone. Its a package deal I suppose and I believe that is what makes him one of my favourite musicians and personalities in the business. His music is amazing, he is a true master guitarist, his good looks are unbeatable, he is energetic and positive person with a great sense of humour, and what I appreciate most from a photographer perspective, he is a performer and needs little to no direction on shoots. He just has it.

There is always excitement in the studio when Albert is due for a photo shoot. The place transforms into a backstage war zone with guitars strewn all over desks, furniture and amps on the floor. Wardrobe and outfits get lost in the chaos. Drummer Kenan James rocks up with drums and cymbals adding to the clutter. Then the music starts and all the disarray disappears. (Don't forget, on shoots like these one always scores a free gig.) Everything comes together and the work starts.

The commission was to create images of Albert and Kenan for general marketing of their shows and fresh material for networking, advertising, material for Fender South Africa (Al's sponsors) and a personal project whereby I was creating surreal images by combining components from archival and current images. More on that in another post.

Albert and Kenan were both very confident in the shoot. No suggestion was ever a bad idea for them. They are guaranteed to agree with any direction and that made it a true pleasure to work with. The shoot went smooth and the results were spectacular.
