Oom Willem's Portrait

Oom Willem's face tells a story of hard work and passion for farming. His story, undoubtedly, is a much longer I had to shoot this portrait in the vineyards near our studio in the Stellenbosch.

With a patient Oom Willem in place on his new tractor I was confronted with a heavy backlight from the mid-morning sun and a strong shadow cast by the tractor canopy. Salvation was at hand and it had Visico written all over it.

For the shot, I used a Canon 5D MkII and a 24-40mm USM L lens with a polarizer filter to enhance colour in the foliage.  Lighting assistance comes from our sponsor, Visico Studio Equipment. In this shot I used a simple one-light setup, placing a 300 W Visico VT-300P at full power, driven by a portable battery pack and triggered by Visico's wireless flash trigger with 30m range. To modify the light I used a Visico 90x60cm softbox.

The flash effectively boosted the clarity in the shadows and enhanced the colours to make this beautiful and saturated shot of Oom Willem.
